Former striker Michael Owen has told Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca that Cole Palmer best position is as a number 10, not as a winger.
The England international enjoyed a breakthrough season, scoring 27 goals and providing 15 assists in all competitions, and was a key player in helping the team carry on its poor run of form last term, winning the Young Player of the Year award.
However, Palmer started the first game of the season in a home defeat to Manchester City, having been moved to the right, which Owen said was a reduction in the player’s effectiveness.
“Chelsea have bought a lot of players who can play in that position, haven’t they?” Owen told Premier League Productions.
“You have players who are not in the team but can play there as well, like Raheem Sterling, I’m sure the manager has seen how good he (Palmer) was last season and the position he played and everything.”
“And you would think when you pick a team, your best players are going to play in their best positions and you’re going to fit in with them. You’re not going to push your best players into unfamiliar positions.”
“If I was the manager, he would be the first player in the team in his position and then I would put others in. But it seems like they have bought too many players and tried to change the team.”
“Before the game (against Man City) สมัคร ufabet, we heard the manager say Cole Palmer can play anywhere up front, which I’m sure he can do, but I want him to be at his best and get more balls in the middle.”
